Insurance & COI — Verified Car badge
Listing a car on Rentcaar is open — you can publish without uploading any verification documents. To earn the optional Verified Car badge (which lifts your listing on cards and reassures renters), upload the two documents below. Both are reviewed once, then re-checked nightly so an expired certificate never goes unnoticed — the badge drops automatically the day either lapses, but your listing stays live.
1. Certificate of Inspection (COI)
A current Certificate of Inspection from an authorised inspection station — confirms your car is roadworthy and meets state safety standards.
- Required for the Verified Car badge (not for listing itself)
- Annual renewal — we'll email you 30 days before expiry
- Badge drops the day a COI lapses (re-upload to restore — listing stays live regardless)
2. Class 4 Compulsory Third Party Insurance
Standard private CTP isn't enough — Class 4 is the policy class for vehicles used in peer-to-peer rental in Australia. Get this from your CTP insurer; the upgrade cost varies by state and vehicle.
- Covers third-party injury claims while the renter is driving
- Standard private CTP voids when the car is rented out — Class 4 is non-negotiable
- Renewed annually with your registration
Comprehensive insurance — recommended, not required
For damage, theft, fire — you should have a comprehensive policy that explicitly covers peer-to-peer rental. Most insurers offer a peer-to-peer rider; tell them you're hosting on Rentcaar so they classify the use correctly.
The bond covers minor damage. For incidents above the bond, hosts file a claim through Rentcaar admin and we either bill the renter's saved card off-session or escalate to your comprehensive cover.
⚠ This is general guidance — not legal advice
Insurance requirements vary by state (QLD, NSW, VIC, WA, SA, TAS, ACT, NT). Confirm your obligations with your insurer and your state's transport department before listing. Rentcaar's admin team verifies that your uploaded paperwork is current; we do not certify that your specific cover is appropriate for your vehicle and circumstances.
